Sugar Overload

22 Mar

Yesterday, I discussed the Spirit House located on an abandoned lot.  I also mentioned that there were no offerings and particularly no strawberry or cherry drinks to keep the Spirits nourished and happy.

Today, while going to work, I noticed that one of the Hopsital’s Spirit Houses seemed to have an over abundance of strawberry drinks available.  It’s not unusual to see one, two or maybe three bottles in front of a Spirit House, but I counted eighteen bottles of the local equivalent of strawberry Fanta, all neatly arranged and ready for drinking.

I wondered why all these drinks were necessary.  Was there something stressful or huge going on that I didn’t know about?  We just completed a very stressful American accreditation.  That was stressful, but it’s done.  I couldn’t think of a reason why all those drinks were necessary.  It was strange.

So unlike the Spirits in the abandoned lot, the hospital’s Spirits seem like they are kept totally energized and ready to help.  It’s lucky that these Spirits live so close to our outpatient and emergency departments, because with all these sugary drinks to be had, there’s a good chance that they could become hyperglycemic and need care.

  1. Love the straws although I believe that the spirits know that straws are not good for the environment. Deities don’t need them and acolytes should know that. Sugar, strawberries, straws…..

    • Agree on all fronts. In Bangkok, straws for drinks and little plastic spoons for yoghurt are part of the purchase, no matter whether you want them or not. It’s silly and bad for the environment.

  2. Straws and those little spoons often get stuck in the nostrils of Whales so shame on the Thai’s for not keeping to the spirit of a clean and environmentally safe place of worship!

I guess Buddhist thinking allows for them to be ignored

I think as a revenue stream a vending machine for Fanta should be placed close to the Spirit House.

Also maybe a blood glucose monitor

I wish it was just that easy to get the God’s that be to accept a number of Fantas for a particular favour. I personally put a coin or two and then everyone once in a while donate the offerings to charity. I do not accept any credit, but might consider accreditation however…..

No one would accept a Fanta especially if it was already opened,…… well, no charity here in Canada

    • I agree that plastic straws and little plastic spoons are a bad idea. Unfortunately, they are way too common in Thailand – more so, I’d say, than in Canada. I wish Thai’s would stop using so many of these two implements. You see them scattered on the streets everywhere.

Good idea about the vending machine and a better one that maybe a coin or two in lieu of the sugary drink might be more worthwhile if used for good works.

And as for the glucometer – definitely a great idea!
